For sure the intensity level rules, but using a timer you can blast that intensity to the sky! I'm all for workouts that are short but sometimes it's good to spend all day on a long hike. But then again I don't know if you could call that a workout in this sense though. But your certainly right Justin. Just because a workout takes a long time, doesn't mean a lot is getting done. I guess that could be said for a lot of other things too.

Time of the workout says nothing. The intensity and level of difficulty put into the workout says it all. It is very possible, and probably preferable, to come up with a workout that couldn't possibly last over 40 minutes.

Kettlebells are the greatest approach to get fit. I in no way bother with any other gear nowadays, just a couple of kettlebells and I appear in top form.

Small world, indeed!

I like your blog a lot. I really enjoyed your vid on the Ironmaster KB. It was spot-on and was very helpful in my decision to buy one.

Keep up the good work!

My first thought is that men gravitate towards bench presses because it is a quantifiable measure (or so we think) of our strength that we can compete with. It's kind of like an isolated variable in a science experiment. It's much more simple to answer the question "who's stronger" rather than "who's more fit"? Because in fitness, so many factors come into play that it's almost impossible to test with a single activity such as bench presses.

Also, pushing a heavy bar upwards repeatedly gives me the comfort of knowing that I'm just doing a workout, exercising specific muscles. But when I do push-ups, suddenly my entire body is engaged and I'm no longer doing a workout at all, I'm fighting to push myself up! The activity becomes a lot more personal - I'm performing a movement that's relevant to the way my body moves outside of workouts. And that in itself, I'm not sure how or why, makes bodyweight exercises more difficult than working with barbells.

Also, the visually noticeable results of bodyweight training come much slower and are not quite like those of conventional bodybuilding. Thus, the lineup for the seemingly more promising lat pull down machine.

I myself am having difficulty believing that I'm better off with bodyweight training. Maybe iron weights and resistance machines still have a small place in general fitness.

Another thought provoking article Matt! Thanks for writing it!

Wow... You have truly saved my life. Over the past 13 months I've lost 101 pounds. I went from 256 to 155. I didnt do it the healthy way really and i drove myself into the ground with starvation of 1500 cals a day and 5 hour workouts. Once I lost the weight I couldnt stop, and break all of the crazy rules I held myself to everyday. I found your videos on youtube as I was looking for self-help videos. You helped me break those rules and pull me back from the brink of system shutdown. I currently put back 7 pounds on since then and its all lean muscle from the gym. I can eat more now and have been able to go out with friends again or miss a day at the gym. You honestly helped me to save my life. Only problem I have left is a bad case of Irritable Bowel Syndrome cause of those drastic diet changes and lifestyle changes over the past year. I'm hoping it'll heal soon. I just wanted to say thank you and I'm honored to watch the new content you produce for all of us on a regular basis on youtube. Thank you! I have been for once in my life, living fit and living free and I couldn't do it without you Fit Rebel!

Funny, I did the same thing a few weeks ago. You're right, it's a lot harder than it seems. I set out to do 10 round trips but after 3 I was done!
